ArtCenter to Host Special Screening of Documentary About Pantone Founder

Film chronicles Larry Herbert's creation of color system that revolutionized design industry
Published on Mar 21, 2025

ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena is hosting a special screening of “The Pantone Guy” (A Work in Progress), a documentary about Larry Herbert, the innovator behind the Pantone Matching System, on Thursday, March 27.

The documentary explores Herbert’s life story from his childhood in Depression-era Brooklyn through his development of the Pantone Matching System that transformed how designers and artists worldwide communicate about color.

At 95 years old, Herbert shares his firsthand experiences growing up in Depression-era Brooklyn and navigating the print and manufacturing industry before creating the revolutionary universal language of color that reshaped art, design, and commerce across multiple industries.

The film includes an exclusive interview with Herbert along with rare archival footage that provides viewers with intimate insights into the mind of a true innovator whose impact remains largely unrecognized – until now.

Following the 80-minute screening, Director Patrick Creadon will participate in a special Q&A session with Sean Adams, ArtCenter’s Dean of Visual Art & Communication Division, to discuss the documentary and Herbert’s legacy.

The event will take place in the Ahmanson Auditorium at ArtCenter’s Hillside Campus, located at 1700 Lida Street in Pasadena, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

ArtCenter said the documentary is a must-see tribute to creativity, vision, and “the power of a single idea to change everything” for designers, artists, and anyone fascinated by color’s role in our world.

Attendance is free but RSVP is advised.
