Four decades after the first Relay for Life brought a community together to walk through the night against cancer, thousands will gather at Santa Anita Park on September 7 for “The Year of the Team Captain”—a milestone anniversary shadowed by projections of more than 2 million Americans facing cancer diagnoses this year.

The nonprofit organization event begins at 11:00 a.m. with cancer survivors leading a ceremonial lap around the Arcadia racetrack, accompanied by music from local performer Larry DiPeppe.

Survivors receive catered lunch from Chop Stop and commemorative goody bags, followed by their caregivers in a procession that anchors Relay events nationwide.

At 9 p.m., participants light individual paper lanterns during a luminaria ceremony honoring both survivors and those lost to the disease.

The overnight event continues with movies and card games before concluding with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Sunday, September 8, and closing ceremonies at 11:00 a.m.

The anniversary comes as the nonprofit organization projects 2,041,910 new cancer cases and 618,120 cancer deaths in the U.S. this year. The organization’s mission remains improving cancer patient and family lives through research, advocacy and support.

Santa Anita Park, located at 285 W. Huntington Drive in Arcadia, provides the backdrop for this milestone gathering.
