Enter Wayne Hunt, a noted local artist who is hanging his mobiles inside a Pilates studio.
For two weekends only, Hunt’s dynamic mobiles go up in and among the classic equipment at True Pilates Pasadena — a pop-up exhibit in the elegant, light-filled main studio on East Union, stocked with a full range of classic gear, authentic apparatus, and accessories. This is not art borrowing a blank wall. Hunt is a Pilates enthusiast himself. “As a Pilates enthusiast, I’ve always marveled at the sculptural qualities of the traditional equipment,” he says. “In the 1920s Joe Pilates designed his apparatus for function, but he had a real eye for how things go together.”
Owner Grete Gryzwana arrived at the idea from the other direction. Hunt had already displayed a few individual mobiles in her studio. “The space does have a bit of a gallery quality, and the equipment is visually interesting,” she says. “Wayne has displayed a few individual mobiles here, so I thought, why not an actual show?”
The mobiles are newer than the résumé suggests. Hunt had been making art for years when, last summer, his daughter asked him to make one for his new granddaughter. “It was so much fun that I made another and another and…,” he says. What began as a nursery favor became a practice — a lot of color, mixed media, and even graphics, worked into the individual elements that make up a finished piece. He’ll tell you he isn’t finished figuring it out. “I’m still learning and experimenting,” he says, “but have mastered the basics of balance, wire construction and moving composition.”
None of which is beginner’s luck. Hunt has had multiple art shows, teaches as Adjunct Professor at Art Center College of Design, and has three works in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. That last credit is the one your friends will want to hear about on the drive over.
Four days, two weekends, one room where everything is built to hang true. Go look up.
