Crowell Public Library will offer “STEAM in the Sun,” a special outdoor educational program designed to engage children ages 3-11 in hands-on learning experiences.
The program, scheduled for Monday, July 14 at 1:00 p.m., combines elements of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in an outdoor setting.
“We have nature walks every week to get kids outside exploring the wonderful area we live in, as well as programs focusing on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM),” a library staff member said regarding summer programming.
STEAM programming provides children with interactive learning opportunities through activities like building with various materials, simple science experiments, and art projects that incorporate mathematical concepts.
For younger participants (ages 3-5), activities focus on fundamental exploration, while children ages 6-8 can engage in more complex building activities such as balloon-powered cars, simple robotics, and structured engineering challenges.
Many public libraries across the United States integrate STEAM activities into their summer reading programs to keep children engaged in learning during school breaks.
These programs often incorporate outdoor activities that combine reading with hands-on exploration and nature-based learning.
“Whether you’re in your backyard or exploring a nearby park or playground, there’s no limit to the fun you can have,” notes the San Diego Public Library regarding outdoor summer reading activities.
Crowell Public Library serves a population of 13,195 residents and circulates 247,654 items per year under the direction of Linda Vera.
The library joins other institutions like Carmel Clay Public Library, which offers “STEAM Explorers” for kids ages 4-6 with caregivers, using special STEAM kits in their Discovery Room.
