Reading selections span all grade levels as research shows a strong correlation between books and achievement

As students prepare for the new academic year, educational experts are highlighting the importance of incorporating quality reading materials into back-to-school preparations.

A curated list of book recommendations spanning from picture books to adult fiction aims to capture academic excitement while supporting student success.

Research shows a strong link between students’ reading habits and academic achievement, but specific percentages may vary depending on the study.

Children who are intrinsically motivated can spend significantly more time reading than students with low motivation, though exact figures differ across research.

The comprehensive reading list includes age-appropriate selections for every educational level.

Picture book recommendations feature “Wemberly Worried” by Kevin Henkes and “First Day Jitters” by Julie Danneberg.

Middle grade selections include “Wink” by Rob Harrell and “A Good Kind of Trouble” by Lisa Moore Ramée.

Adult fiction recommendations include “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles and “Disorientation” by Elaine Hsieh Chou.

This reading initiative comes as back-to-school spending for K-12 students is expected to reach $41.5 billion.

“Parents are laser-focused on preparing their children for the school year, but we expect back-to-school spending to remain flat amid economic headwinds,” said Natalie Martini, vice chair and U.S. retail & consumer products sector leader at Deloitte.

Educational research supports the initiative’s foundation.

The difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on education as having barely literate versus university-educated parents.

Recent performance data shows concern as average scores for age nine students declined five points in reading and seven points in mathematics compared to 2020.
