Every professional stand-up has a version of the same night in their history: a room half full of other comics, a light at the back signaling time, and five minutes to find out whether the bit works. The Ice House runs that night on Thursdays.
Breaking The Ice, the club’s open mic, takes place Thursday in the California Room. Attendance is free and open to anyone who wants to watch. Comics who want stage time enter through a bucket pull — a food or drink purchase from the bar earns one entry, and names are drawn for slots.
The setting carries some weight. The Ice House has operated on North Mentor Avenue for more than 60 years, and it bills itself as the oldest comedy club in the country. Lakers co-owner Johnny Buss bought it in 2019; the club closed months later during the pandemic and reopened in 2023 after a full renovation.
The list of comics who have worked the room runs long, and most of them started somewhere structurally identical to a Thursday open mic.
What an open mic offers a spectator is different from what a ticketed show offers. Some of it will not work. That is the point — the material is being tested in front of people for the first time, and the failures are as informative as the laughs.
