Every Tuesday morning, a pianist who has performed at New York’s Smalls Jazz Club and the Blue Note Hawaii pulls up a bench at a Pasadena coffee shop and plays jazz for whoever walks in.

The performance is free. It starts at 8:30 a.m. Seating is limited, and early arrival is recommended.

The pianist is Matt Politano, a Los Angeles-based musician who teaches at Mt. San Antonio College and has given youth concerts throughout Los Angeles as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center. His Coffee Shop Jazz Trio performs every Tuesday at Jones Coffee Roasters, 693 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, with stand-up bassist Blake White and drummer Mark Ferber. The set runs roughly an hour. The genre is modern jazz and Latin fusion.

Ferber, whose résumé spans more than 200 recordings, according to his official biography, performs regularly in jazz clubs and recording studios across Los Angeles and New York.

Politano trained at the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied piano under Garry Dial after beginning his musical career as a trumpeter in the University of North Texas’s One O’Clock Lab Band. His past performance credits, listed on his official website, include the Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles, Jazz Alley in Seattle, and City Winery in New York City.

Guest musicians join the trio throughout the year for special performances, according to Jones Coffee Roasters’ music program page.

A recent International Jazz Day event listing described Politano as “one of the greats,” comparing his approach to that of pianist Keith Jarrett and citing his sensitivity and creativity, according to the listing posted on jazzday.com.

The next performance is Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free. Jones Coffee Roasters, on Raymond Avenue near Old Town Pasadena, is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Questions about the music program may be directed to esteban@jonescoffee.com. Updates on performances are posted on Jones Coffee Roasters’ Instagram, @jonescoffee. Politano’s Instagram is @mattpolitanomusic.

Jones Coffee Roasters’ program page advises arriving early to secure seating. The residency has been a weekly fixture at the venue, according to Politano’s own website, which lists it as an ongoing engagement alongside bookings at established jazz venues across Southern California.
