Thousands of books, DVDs and other media will flood the Altadena Main Library parking lot next weekend as the Friends of the Altadena Library hosts one of the largest used book sales in the Los Angeles area.
The event takes place on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library Parking Lot. The first two hours on Saturday are reserved exclusively for Friends members.
Non-members can become a member on-site for $10 to gain early access.
Proceeds from the Friends book sales go toward sponsoring Library programs available for free to all ages, such as the Second Saturday Concert Series and the Altadena Poets Laureate.
“The purpose of the Friends of the Altadena Library is to stimulate public interest in the library, assist with funding to purchase library materials, and to support cultural and educational programs at the Altadena Library,” notes the organization’s website.
The Friends of the Altadena Library, established in 1959 and currently led by Tom Ruffner, serves as an essential support organization for the library District.
More than 10,000 fiction and nonfiction books, DVDs, and more will be available for purchase at the sale, according to Ruffner.
Previous Friends book sales have featured “over 50,000 fiction and non-fiction, hardback and paperback books for all interests and age groups, plus DVDs, CDs and other items.”
The event comes as the library system’s Bob Lucas Memorial Library branch remains closed for renovation after breaking ground on April 18, 2024, with the project expected to take about a year.
The Altadena Main Library is located at 600 E. Mariposa Street, Altadena, California 91001, and is open Monday and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The library will be closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day, but there is an outdoor book return at the Main Library on Mariposa Street, at the corner of Santa Rosa Avenue.
After the weekend book sale concludes, the library’s calendar continues with the Altadena Library Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, May 19, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., available both in-person at the Community Room at Main Library and virtually via the Altadena Library YouTube channel.
