The drop-in talk, part of a monthly series Imperi leads at The Huntington, focuses this month on choosing the right plants to draw hummingbirds to a yard or balcony and on managing the territorial behavior that often turns one feeder into a no-fly zone for every bird except the local bully. Imperi, a California Master Gardener and California Master Food Preserver, also works as a horticulturalist for a Hummingbird Garden.
The Tiffany Sisters Hummingbird Gazebo is one of The Huntington’s quieter draws, tucked into the institution’s 120 acres of specialized gardens in San Marino. Visitors who arrive early enough to settle into the gazebo before Imperi begins often spot hummingbirds threading through the surrounding plantings, a kind of preview of the lesson to come.
The talk format is informal and meant for drop-in visitors rather than registered attendees, making it accessible for families and casual garden enthusiasts as well as serious birders. Children are welcome, though the program is not specifically structured for young children — those looking for a kid-focused hummingbird experience may want to check The Huntington’s separate story time offering.
