Yunhe Liang 梁雲河 on Erhu 二胡. | The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens.
The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens continues its “Music in the Chinese Garden” series, showcasing solo musicians performing unamplified melodies on classical Chinese instruments in one of Southern California’s most magical landscapes.
A different solo musician performs each week, playing the dizi, pipa, and erhu in Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. Featured performers include Yunhe Liang on erhu, Meiye Ma on pipa, Teh-Shu Yang on dizi, and Rene Ren-jian Wu on erhu.
Rene Ren-jian Wu graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and became the principal erhu player for the Beijing Dance Academy Orchestra. Since coming to the U.S. in 1980, he has performed at museums, universities, community festivals, and the Hollywood Bowl.
Meiye Ma was born in Shanghai and began studying pipa at age 10 to pursue her interest in Suzhou pingtan, a musical storytelling tradition. She became the principal soloist for the Shanghai Film Orchestra and continues to perform and teach in Los Angeles.
Teh-Shu Yang fell in love with the dizi as a teenager in Taiwan after hearing a neighbor play it. He has performed the dizi for more than 50 years.
Generous support for the music series is provided by the Justin Vajna Memorial Fund for Educational Programs in the Chinese Garden. Events may be canceled due to rain or excessive heat.
Music in the Chinese Garden will run on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 1–3 p.m. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, California.
