New York Times bestselling author Lisa See returns to the venue where Vroman’s Bookstore has hosted every one of her book launches since the start of her career on Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m., when she discusses and signs “Daughters of the Sun and Moon,” her newly published novel set in post-Civil War Los Angeles.
The novel follows three Chinese women — Dove, Petal and Moon — who arrive in 1870 in what See’s publisher describes as the small, dusty and violent pueblo Los Angeles was at the time. The women navigate arranged marriages, indentured servitude, foot-binding scars and the brutal racial violence that culminated in the 1871 Chinese massacre, building a friendship that becomes the spine of the book. The novel publishes the same day as the Pasadena event, which functions as the official launch.
Library Journal awarded the book a starred review, calling it “a stunning piece of historical fiction based in truth,” and Publishers Weekly named it a summer 2026 staff pick. The work joins a body of historical fiction See has built around the lives of Chinese and Chinese American women across several centuries, including “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan,” “The Island of Sea Women” and “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women.”
This is a ticketed event. Tickets include one entry and one copy of “Daughters of the Sun and Moon,” distributed at check-in. A public book signing will follow the presentation, with See expected to inscribe books for both ticket-holders and walk-up attendees as time allows.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church, across from Pasadena City Hall, accommodates the larger crowds these signature Vroman’s launches reliably draw.
