Pasadena City College begins its Latine Heritage Month observance Sept. 15, opening a monthlong program that continues through Oct. 15 at the college’s campus in Pasadena.
The college describes the observance as a series of events honoring the culture, history and contributions of the Latine community, according to its Latine Heritage Month page.
Nearly half of Pasadena City College students identify as Latine, the college said on that page as of Sept. 13. The college also said it invites every division, department and program on campus to take part.
Pasadena City College is a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, according to the college.
The college uses the term Latine for a group of people of multiple genders and for people who identify as nonbinary, gender fluid, genderqueer, bigender, agender or gender nonconforming, according to its page. The college said Latine is commonly used among Spanish speakers because it is more easily pronounced than Latinx and can be used in plural forms.
The Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Justice, the Association of Latino Employees, HSI Alianza, the Student Advisory Equipo and the Puente Project are partners in this year’s celebration, the college said.
