The two-hour Community Open Studio is exactly what the name suggests. Bring a project — or a school assignment, or a curious teenager, or simply an idea — and use the nonprofit’s tools, sewing machines, supplies and tables at no charge. A studio facilitator will be on hand to help. The event takes place at 787 E. Washington Blvd., Suite 101
in Pasadena, where Remainders runs a creative space upstairs from its arts and crafts thrift store.
Remainders Creative Reuse is a Pasadena-based nonprofit that operates the thrift store as a treasure trove of donated craft supplies and runs low-cost classes year-round in sewing, printmaking, fiber arts, collage and more. The organization describes its mission as providing creative resources to the community and implementing local, inclusive artistic opportunities. Its model — keep usable supplies out of landfills, sell them affordably and let neighbors come in and make things — has earned it 40 to 50 weekly volunteers and a quiet but devoted local following.
For families looking for a cheap, low-pressure art night, students with deadlines and adults who simply miss the act of making something with their hands, Wednesday’s session offers the rare combination of free tools, free space and someone to ask.
Remainders Creative Reuse Community Open Studio will run on Wednesday, May 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Remainders Creative Reuse, 787 E. Washington Blvd., Suite 101, Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 529-5014 or visit remainderspas.org. Admission is free.
