The Zeta Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. — the Pasadena-based group known as the ‘Rose Bowl Ques’ — will hold its third annual jazz fundraising concert, “Ques in the City,” on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 5 to 10 p.m. at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield, according to a chapter press release.
The annual fundraiser pairs an evening of live jazz with a slate of community resources, and its proceeds support the chapter’s service programs and student scholarships.
The Blue Breeze Band will headline, and the John Tirabasso Youth Jazz Ensemble will also perform during the evening. According to the chapter’s announcement, the Blue Breeze Band performs a blend of Motown, R&B, soul, funk, jazz and blues, and has appeared at concerts, festivals, weddings and corporate galas. The release describes the John Tirabasso Community Youth Jazz Ensemble as a music program that teaches young musicians to perform live jazz.
Tickets are $30. Beyond the music, the chapter said, the event will feature community-service organizations, vendors, city service representatives, voter registration and health information.
Proceeds support the chapter’s year-round community service activities and its high-school scholarship program, which awards scholarships to graduating seniors at Pasadena public high schools, according to the release. The chapter also awards the Eugene Quishenberry Scholarship to Black men in Pasadena public high schools.
Founded in 1957, the Zeta Tau Chapter — known as the Rose Bowl Ques — serves Pasadena. Its service work, as described in the release, includes the Harold G. Reese, Sr. Father’s Day Walk and an annual Youth Leadership Conference at the University of La Verne, where members mentor area youth. The chapter also collects food for a local food bank, holds clothing drives for unhoused people and fire victims, cooks meals for the unhoused, runs voter registration events and distributes hygiene kits to those in need.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded Nov. 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The fraternity lists its cardinal principles as manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift. According to the release, it has initiated more than 250,000 members and has more than 750 chapters worldwide.
