A celebrated soprano and Fulbright scholar will showcase African American classical music in the Cultural Thursday series at the Pasadena Senior Center on Thursday, Feb. 6.
Marlaina Owens, described as a “velvet-voiced soprano” and known for extensive performances across Europe and the United States, aims to champion classical works by African American composers that have historically received less recognition.
Born in Los Angeles, the vocalist completed a 2022-2023 Fulbright scholarship with the Fondation des Etats Unis Music Residency and brings significant international performance experience to the Cultural Thursday event.
Owens has built an impressive operatic repertoire including roles in La Cenerentola, Giustino, Die Fledermaus, and multiple Puccini operas, while studying under renowned professionals Sylvia Kevorkian, Jory Vinikour, and Janet Williams.
In 2024, her schedule ranged from performing with Pocket Opera to providing background vocals for John Legend and making her Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in Solange Knowles’ curated program.
Drawing from her research on musical connections between the Parisian Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance, Owens moves effortlessly between different musical genres and performance styles.
Owens, who operates Birdsong Studios teaching voice and piano, specializes in a combination of classical and speech singing techniques while holding advanced degrees in vocal performance.
The presentation on Thursday begins at 2 p.m., with free admission for members and a $5.00 fee for non-members. Reservations are recommended for all attendees.
