Families in Pasadena can enjoy free entertainment every Wednesday morning at Vroman’s Bookstore when Mr. Steve and Miss Marie present their popular storytime program. The 45-minute session begins at 11 a.m. with songs accompanied by Miss Marie on drums and vocals, followed by storytelling led by Steve in the upstairs children’s section.
Vroman’s Bookstore, which celebrated 130 years of operation in 2024, serves as a vital community gathering space. The historic independent bookstore, founded on November 14, 1894, by Adam Clark Vroman, hosts more than 400 free community events annually.
CEO Julia Cowlishaw stated, “We strive to be a place for discovery and inspiration through our selection of books and gifts, and a gathering place for the community.”
The storytime series represents part of Vroman’s broader commitment to children’s programming, including summer reading programs, author events and book clubs. The weekly ritual connects Southern California’s oldest and largest independent bookstore to its youngest readers.
Vroman’s rich history extends beyond its longevity. For many years, it was the largest bookstore west of the Mississippi. During World War II, Vroman’s courageously donated and delivered books to Japanese Americans interned at nearby camps, returning despite being fired upon by guards.
Today, Vroman’s continues community engagement through its Vroman’s Gives Back program, which partners with organizations including Friends in Deed. The bookstore is currently hosting its 11th annual “Christmas for the Kids” holiday gift drive through December 15, offering a 20 percent discount on eligible in-store purchases.
