A piano duo, a string duet, a vocal soloist and a piano trio walk into a church — and what follows is an hour of music spanning two centuries of the European chamber tradition.

Tuesday Musicale, one of Pasadena’s oldest cultural organizations, founded in 1914, presents its free monthly concert on Tuesday, April 7 at 12:30 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in the Sunday School room. The concerts take place on the first Tuesday of each month from October through June.

The program opens with Gabriel Fauré’s “Dolly Suite,” Op. 56, performed as a duo piano work — a set of six charming miniatures originally written for piano four-hands. A quintet will perform “Song about Em,” followed by a violin and cello duet drawn from the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Mezzo-soprano Bernice Brightbill contributes
vocal selections, and the concert closes with a piano trio by Felix Mendelssohn featuring Ann Levi on violin, Helen Taylor on cello and Benjamin Ban at the piano.

Tuesday Musicale’s mission centers on promoting the knowledge, performance and enjoyment of music among its members and throughout the community. The organization has continued its programming this season despite the closure of the Pasadena Central Public Library for seismic retrofitting, relocating concerts to the First Church of Christ, Scientist.

The concert offers a midday break with serious musicianship in an intimate setting — the kind of programming that has sustained Tuesday Musicale for more than a century.

Tuesday Musicale presents a free concert on Tuesday, April 7 at 12:30 p.m. First Church of Christ, Scientist, 80 S. Oakland Ave., in Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 797-1994.
