“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” held onto its box office crown, grossing $22.2 million in its fifth weekend in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The blockbuster, which stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, has now grossed over $891 million domestically and over $2.33 billion worldwide, the fourth- highest total in history, Rentrak reported.
“Coyote vs. Acme,” a comedy that mixes live action and animated elements to tell a story about Wile E. Coyote, the iconic Looney Tunes character who was forever being foiled by the Road Runner, opened with $15.4 million for second place.
“The Odyssey” was third with $14.3 million Friday through Sunday in its seventh weekend.
“Insidious: Out of the Further” was fourth with $10.1 million in its second weekend, followed by director Ridley Scott’s new action film “The Dog Stars,” which opened with $8 million.
The horror film “Buddy” opened with $5.3 million for sixth place.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “The End of Oak Street” ($4.9 million), “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” ($4.8 million), “Mutiny” ($2.7 million) and “Tony” ($2.2 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $100 million. The year-to-date total is $7.22 billion — up 21.2% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
