The Carnegie Science Observatories’ annual Open House free and running from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. transforms the research facility in Pasadena into an all-ages portal to the universe, where serious science meets simple joy.
Visitors can tour the machine shop where instruments for Carnegie telescopes are built, play a custom video game in the 3-D Visualization Lab, and examine historic glass photographic plates in the Hale Library. A solar telescope will allow safe viewing of the Sun.
The “Ask an Astronomer” table offers direct access to scientists ready to field questions about stars, planets and deep space mysteries. Updates on the Giant Magellan Telescope, one of the most powerful next-generation telescopes in development will show where astronomy is headed.
“Come explore the cosmos at the Carnegie Science Observatories! Plus, free paletas for the whole family!” organizers announced.
Those who register in advance receive a space-themed gift. Free paletas will be available for all families, along with constellation-making crafts and other children’s activities.
Parking is limited on-site. Attendees are encouraged to take the Metro A Line to Lake Avenue or Sierra Madre Villa stations, each about a ten-minute walk from the observatory.
Carnegie Observatories Open House will run on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Carnegie Science Observatories, 813 Santa Barbara St., in Pasadena. For more information, call (626) 577-1122 or visit. https://carnegiescience.edu/events/observatories-open-house-2025. Tickets: Free.
