As the tween SUV in the Jeep lineup, the Compass has a smaller footprint while still providing room for four to sit comfortably. For 2023 the Jeep Compass receives a significant powertrain upgrade with the introduction of a new turbocharged engine. This advanced engine offers improved performance and better fuel economy compared to last year’s Compass. To complement it, an eight-speed automatic transmission has been included, adding to both driving dynamics and efficiency.
All Compass models now come standard with four-wheel-drive capability, providing enhanced traction and off-road potential across the entire range. Safety features have also been bolstered with the addition of two key systems: a drowsy driver monitor to help prevent accidents caused by fatigue, and a rear seat reminder to ensure no occupants or valuable items are accidentally left behind.
With the new turbo 4-cylinder engine the Compass produces 200 horses and 221 pound-feet of torque. The paired eight-speed automatic trany delivers quick upshifts but seems to bog down the engine with its slow downshifts, making the engine seem sluggish at times. Expect to get 24/city, 32/highway and 27/combined mpg.
The 2023 Jeep Compass is available in five trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited and Trailhawk. This review will focus on the base model Sport.
The Compass Sport is packed with a range of impressive features that enhance both its style and functionality. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and boasts LED headlights for improved visibility. The heated mirrors ensure clear views in cold weather, while the roof rails add extra storage options. Inside, you’ll find a 60/40-split rear bench seat and cloth upholstery, providing comfort and flexibility for passengers and cargo.
The technology inside the Compass Sport is equally advanced. It includes a 10.1-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch information cluster display, offering intuitive control and clear information. The six-speaker sound system delivers quality audio, and smartphone integration is seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both supporting wireless connectivity. Additional features like satellite radio, first- and second-row USB ports, and an adjustable load floor further enhance the vehicle’s convenience and entertainment capabilities.
Safety is a top priority in the Compass Sport, which comes equipped with several advanced driver-assist features. Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking helps prevent accidents by warning of potential collisions and applying the brakes when necessary. Lane departure mitigation alerts the driver of unintended lane departures and can steer the vehicle back into its lane. The blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert enhances safety during lane changes and reversing, while the driver attention warning detects signs of driver fatigue and issues alerts. A rear seat reminder ensures that you check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle, adding another layer of safety.
I found the Compass comfortable enough for daily commutes but the seats began to feel a bit flat after an hour or so. It took me a while to figure out the control structure on the dash. The buttons and switches were really not all that intuitive and took some getting used to. Pick up was great in the Compass with the new turbo engine and I found the steering to be grounded.
I enjoyed my time in the Compass. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a muddy road!
