The 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge has undergone significant improvements in performance and efficiency, while maintaining its familiar exterior design. A notable addition to the lineup is the new single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration (which is what I drove), which offers an impressive range of nearly 300 miles. This model features a rear-mounted electric motor paired with an 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack, delivering an EPA-estimated range of 293 miles on a single charge. Charging capabilities have also been enhanced, with the ability to replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes when connected to a 200-kilowatt DC fast charger.
Powering the XC40 Recharge is a rear-mounted electric motor paired with an 82-kWh lithium-ion battery, generating 248 horsepower. This Single Motor configuration proves more than adequate for everyday driving situations, delivering quick acceleration from a standstill and ample power for reaching higher speeds with ease.
The XC40 Recharge offers a sophisticated and well-crafted interior that embodies Scandinavian design principles. Drawing inspiration from minimalist aesthetics, the cabin features a calm and ergonomically optimized environment with sophisticated seats and a high seating position.
The SUV comfortably accommodates five passengers, providing spacious seating in both front and rear rows. Front and rear passengers benefit from plenty of leg and head room. However, taller drivers might find the driving position slightly challenging and will probably feel a bit cramped in the back, but that’s nothing new for a tall person.
In terms of cargo, the XC40 Recharge delivers practical storage solutions. Behind the second-row seats, you’ll find 16 cubic feet of cargo space, which is somewhat limited for its class. Folding down the rear seats expands the cargo capacity to an impressive 57.5 cubic feet, providing ample room for larger items. The vehicle also features clever storage solutions, including a front trunk suitable for storing the charging cable and small items.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge offers a comfortable ride with some nuanced driving characteristics. While the SUV handles most road surfaces adequately, it exhibits light and somewhat vague steering that can feel disconnected from the road. The vehicle’s handling is most comfortable when driven in a relaxed manner, with noticeable body lean through corners.
One standout feature is its one-pedal driving capability, which allows the car to slow down significantly when the driver lifts off the accelerator. This regenerative braking system is particularly effective in city traffic, providing a precise way to decelerate. However, unlike many other electric vehicles, the XC40 Recharge does not offer adjustable regenerative braking levels, which might take some getting used to for drivers not familiar with regenerative braking.
The SUV’s suspension provides a relatively smooth ride, though it can feel slightly choppy on poorly surfaced roads due to the battery pack’s weight. Despite these minor drawbacks, the XC40 Recharge remains an easy and smooth vehicle to drive.
I always feel safe and secure in a Volvo, the XC40 Recharge was no exception. With great range, comfy seating and an attractive interior, the 2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge Single Motor Ultimate is an attractive package.
