La Cañada Presbyterian Church to Celebrate Mother’s Day with Special Choir and Opportunities to Serve

Published on Monday, May 7, 2012 | 3:01 pm

This Mother’s Day, families at La Canada Presbyterian Church will honor their own moms by celebrating the heroic stories of mothers across LA County and around the world. “Mothering Our Kids, Mothering Our Communities” is the theme of this Sunday’s celebration which launches the church’s Faith Missions Week to highlight the work of over 40 local and global outreach partners that serve the poor. Services are at 7:55, 9:25, and 11 a.m. with patio festivities happening after each worship service.

“Because so many of these partners help mothers and children around the world, the connection to our own Mother’s Day celebration seemed a natural one,” says Megan Katerjian, LCPC’s Director of Outreach and Adult Formation. “As we hear about mothers rebuilding their lives from poverty, recovering from addiction or domestic violence, and finding the support to raise healthy families, we ourselves are inspired to raise healthier families and honor the hard work of motherhood.”

One highlight this Sunday is special music from the Sounds of Joy Gospel Choir from the Walter Hoving Home in Pasadena, a group of women recovering from addiction and prostitution. Florence Anang, Program Director of Harambee Ministries, will preach on God’s work among the families Harambee serves in northwest Pasadena. A resident from Elizabeth House, a Pasadena home for homeless, pregnant women in crisis, will share her story of hope.

Dozens of local and global outreach partners will be on the patio to share about their work and offer opportunities to serve. People can sign up for hands-on service trips throughout La Canada, Pasadena, and LA that address the needs of the homeless, abused women, at-risk youth, foster children, people recovering from addiction or mental illness, or the unemployed. Finally, families can buy alternative Mother’s Day gifts at the Faith Missions Market, making a donation on a mother’s behalf to one of these worthy causes.

About La Cañada Presbyterian Church

La Cañada Presbyterian Church (LCPC) began in 1948 with 158 members and a vision to reach the world for Jesus Christ. That early church was built quite literally on faith and charity from remainder brick and an operating budget that turned just about all of its revenue into active ministry. Through 65 years of outreach, LCPC grew to 2,000 active attendees doing ministry throughout Southern California and in 40 countries around the world. In 2010 the church completed a campus expansion which doubled its physical base for ministry and kept its historical sanctuary as the heart of the new grounds.
