The rubber surface replacement project was completed in partnership with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS).
Public Works Director Tony Olmos said the replacement of the rubber surface at the Villa Parke playground was completed in November 2022. That at Reese’s Retreat was completed in December 2022. The work was part of a $195,000 capital improvement project, Olmos said in a memorandum to the City Manager.
“Due to heavy usage at both locations, the rubberized playing surface deteriorated beyond repair and required complete replacement,” the Public Works Department said.
The construction schedule for each park was designed to accommodate residents, allowing them to be able to use the parks during each of the school holiday breaks, he explained.
Reese’s Retreat at Brookside Park has become one of the City’s most popular playground destinations since it opened 11 years ago. Its popularity stems from its unique pirate-themed play equipment and its rubberized play surfacing that provides for universal accessibility.
The Villa Parke playground provides recreational opportunities for the center’s Head Start Program as well as the surrounding community.
