The Omega Sci-Fi Project will host its milestone 10th anniversary celebration featuring Hollywood actors performing original science fiction stories written by Los Angeles County high school students. The Tomorrow Prize & The Green Feather Award: Celebrity Readings & Honors event will take place on Saturday, May 17 at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, offering the public a chance to witness professional actors bringing student work to life.
The program’s mission is to “empower emerging young writers to contribute their unique voices and diverse perspectives to the art of science fiction story writing while tapping into the power of science fiction to examine the greatest challenges and moral dilemmas humanity faces.”
The free public event will run from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PDT and feature dramatic readings by six celebrity guests, including several Star Trek alumni.
Notable performers include Nana Visitor (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager), Isabella Gomez (One Day at a Time), Marcelo Tubert (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Rico E. Anderson (The Orville), and Amy Tolsky (Jury Duty). Anderson, beyond his acting career, also serves on the organizing Board of the Omega Sci-Fi Project.
This event represents the culmination of months of creative development and competition. This year’s competition drew impressive participation, with 133 students from 18 different schools across Los Angeles County submitting original science fiction stories. Submissions were accepted through Feb. 28, with finalists announced in April 2025.
The Tomorrow Prize encourages high school students to use science fiction to explore diverse societal issues including social justice, feminism, identity, inequity, environmental sustainability, ethics, innovation, and technology.
Winners will receive cash prizes of $250, $150, and $100 for first, second, and third place, respectively. Additionally, the first-place winner’s story will be published in L.A. Parent Magazine.
A special eco-sci-fi prize, The Green Feather Award, is co-presented by the Nature Nexus Institute. This award highlights environmentally focused stories that integrate creative solutions to climate and biodiversity crises. The competition specifically seeks stories that reimagine new ways of living sustainably and emphasizes the importance of ecology, particularly that of Southern California. The Green Feather Award winner receives a $250 prize and online publication through the Nature Nexus Institute.
Throughout the academic year, the Omega Sci-Fi Project provides valuable educational opportunities for students through free classroom workshops led by trained writers and literary enthusiasts. These workshops help students explore the development, writing, and editing processes for crafting science fiction stories.
Following the celebrity readings, students will be honored for their writing achievements, along with recognition for the educators, librarians, and authors who supported this creative initiative.
The event is free and open to the public, though pre-registration is recommended through the Brown Paper Tickets platform at https://omegascifi.
