Farmworkers Day: What’s Open and Closed in Pasadena on March 30 and 31

County offices and schools close Monday; state offices and courts close Tuesday — but City of Pasadena services run all week

Pasadena residents face a split holiday week as Farmworkers Day triggers two separate rounds of closures: Los Angeles County offices and public schools shut down Monday, March 30, while California state offices, courts, and the Department of Motor Vehicles close Tuesday, March 31. The City of Pasadena, which does not officially observe the holiday, will remain fully operational both days.

The closures reflect the newly renamed state holiday, formerly known as Cesar Chavez Day, which California lawmakers officially renamed Farmworkers Day last week following sexual abuse allegations against the United Farm Workers co-founder.

Los Angeles County, which traditionally observes the holiday on the last Monday of March, will close Monday; state government, which ties the holiday to Chavez’s March 31 birthday, will close Tuesday. Pasadena Police and Fire Departments will maintain full staffing for emergencies throughout both days.

Government and Municipal Services

City Hall and all City of Pasadena administrative offices will be open for regular business hours on both Monday and Tuesday. The City Service Center, Municipal Services Payment Center, Parking Office, and Permit Center will operate normally. Some permitting services are also available around the clock via Permit Center Online at cityofpasadena.net.

Pasadena Water and Power offices will be open, and customers can reach customer service at (626) 744-4005 or access accounts and make payments online at PWPweb.com. For power emergencies, call (626) 744-4673. For water emergencies, call (626) 744-4138.

The Pasadena City Council is scheduled to hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 30.

Los Angeles County government offices, including the Department of Public Social Services, the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, and the Department of Mental Health, will be closed Monday, March 30, and will reopen Tuesday morning. California state offices, including the DMV, will be closed Tuesday, March 31. The Los Angeles Superior Court will also be closed Tuesday. For court holiday information, visit lacourt.ca.gov.

Transportation and Parking

Pasadena Transit and Dial-A-Ride buses will operate on their regular weekday schedules on both Monday and Tuesday. Los Angeles Metro buses and trains will also run on standard weekday schedules on both days. Metrolink commuter rail will operate on its regular schedule; riders should note that Metrolink has implemented temporary service reductions starting March 23 and should check metrolinktrains.com for updated timetables before traveling.

All Pasadena parking meters will require payment, and parking time limits will be fully enforced on both days. Overnight parking restrictions, red curb parking, “No Parking” zones, and blocking fire hydrants will be enforced as usual.

Postal and Package Services

Because Farmworker’s Day is a state holiday and not a federal holiday, the United States Postal Service will operate normally on both Monday and Tuesday. All USPS retail facilities, including the Pasadena Post Office, will be open, and residential and business mail delivery will proceed on schedule. Priority Mail Express will also continue as usual. Private carriers, including UPS and FedEx, will maintain their regular pickup and delivery services on both days. UPS Store locations may vary; customers should confirm hours with their local store.

Financial Services

All major banks — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase — will remain open on both days, as Farmworker’s Day is not a Federal Reserve holiday. Local credit unions will also be open. ATM services and online banking platforms will be fully available. The New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and bond markets will be open for regular trading on both Monday and Tuesday.

Schools and Libraries

Pasadena Unified School District schools and offices will be closed Monday, March 30, as students begin their spring recess. Schools will remain closed for the week. Pasadena City College will be closed Tuesday, March 31, in observance of the state holiday; the PCC Library will be open Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. but closed Tuesday. ArtCenter College of Design will remain open, as its spring break does not begin until April.

All Pasadena Public Library branches will be open for their regular hours on both Monday and Tuesday, as the City of Pasadena does not observe the holiday. Los Angeles County Library locations will be closed Monday, March 30, and will reopen Tuesday. For Pasadena Public Library hours and branch information, visit cityofpasadena.net/library or call (626) 744-4066.

Recreation and Waste Services

All Pasadena city parks will be open for picnics, play, and recreation on both days. Community and recreation centers will also remain open. Site reservations for parks will be accepted as usual.

The City of Pasadena will collect trash, recycling, and yard waste on its regular schedule on both Monday and Tuesday. Bulky item pickups will also proceed without interruption.

Retail and Business

Major grocery stores, including Vons, Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Pavilions, will be open for regular hours. Pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid will operate normally. Major retailers, including Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, along with shopping centers such as Paseo Colorado and Old Pasadena, will remain open. Restaurants and local dining establishments will observe their standard hours; individual locations may vary.

Regular county government services will resume Tuesday morning. Regular state government services will resume Wednesday, April 1.
