A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning for Sidney Terrance Johnson, the Los Angeles man charged with murder in the fatal 2021 shooting of a Monrovia woman on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Arcadia.
According to the court calendar, the hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. in Department F of the Pasadena Courthouse, 300 E. Walnut St.
Johnson faces a first-degree murder charge in the September 4, 2021, death of Bertha Hernandez, a 35-year-old Monrovia resident.
Prosecutors allege Johnson drove alongside Hernandez’s car on the eastbound Interstate 210 in Arcadia and opened fire. Witnesses reported he fired at least 10 shots, with two bullets striking Hernandez.
CHP-sourced reporting said she suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head. Investigators said surveillance footage showed Johnson’s Infiniti sedan following Hernandez’s black Mercedes-Benz from her home to the freeway before the shooting, which occurred around 9 a.m. Hernandez’s mother identified Johnson to investigators as her daughter’s boyfriend, and prosecutors have pointed to the route from Hernandez’s home to the freeway as evidence of premeditation.
The shooting forced an eight-hour closure of the freeway section while authorities conducted their investigation.
Johnson was arrested at his Los Angeles home following a two-month investigation, and officers said they recovered evidence relevant to the crime in his possession. He has remained in custody since then, most recently reported at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.
His bail was reported at $2 million at the time of his arrest,
The case has moved through multiple pretrial stages since Johnson’s arrest, including a preliminary hearing that set additional court dates in the ongoing prosecution.
No trial date has been publicly confirmed as of Wednesday’s hearing.
