New traffic pattern to be implemented following temporary weekend road closure

The second phase of the Avenue 64 Complete Street project at the intersection with Burleigh Drive in West Pasadena is nearing completion. City officials announced that a full road closure will take place this weekend to allow for the transition to a new traffic configuration.

According to a memorandum from Tony Olmos, Pasadena’s Director of Public Works, the intersection will be fully closed on Saturday, May 11 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The closure will continue on Sunday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as needed.

During the closure, crews will implement a new traffic pattern featuring a newly constructed roundabout that separates northbound and southbound traffic through the intersection. Once the new configuration is in place, one travel lane in each direction on Avenue 64 will remain open at all times. Access to Burleigh Drive from Avenue 64 will also be available during the final construction phase.

Changeable message signs advising of the forthcoming closure have been in place since the week of April 29, according to the City.

Stakeholders, including emergency services, residents, and neighborhood associations, have been notified, the City said, and the City’s Public Information Office has been providing outreach via social media outlets.

“Once completed, the proposed improvements are intended to mitigate speeding along the Avenue 64 corridor and enhance pedestrian safety,” Olmos stated in a memo published in the City Manager’s newsletter Thursday.

In 2013, the project went through the City’s Neighborhood Traffic Management Program process, with a community workgroup providing input on traffic calming elements.

Phase two construction, which was to wrap up on May 10, included new pavement, splitter islands, landscaping preparation, storm drain upgrades, and a curb extension.

The upcoming third and final phase will involve completing curbs, gutters, sidewalks, curb ramps, streetlights, storm drains, landscaping and irrigation on the west side of Avenue 64.

Detour routes during the full closure will direct Avenue 64 traffic to Doremus Road and Church Street. Motorists traveling between Pasadena and Los Angeles will be detoured to Figueroa Street. The entire Avenue 64 Complete Streets project is expected to be finished by the end of June 2024.
