Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Set for Pasadena

Police to launch targeted traffic enforcement to protect vulnerable road users

The Pasadena Police Department will conduct a comprehensive traffic safety operation on Aug. 1 targeting dangerous driver behaviors that threaten bicyclists and pedestrians.

The operation will focus on critical violations that put vulnerable road users at risk, including speeding, illegal turns, and failure to yield right of way, an official said.

“We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car,” Lt. Anthony Russo reminded drivers.

“Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.”

The safety initiative will address key violations such as drivers failing to stop for signs and signals, and not providing appropriate space and right of way to cyclists and pedestrians.

The Pasadena Police Department has outlined specific safety guidelines for all road users, highlighting the importance of predictability and awareness.

For pedestrians, recommended safety measures include using crosswalks, being visible, and exercising caution, especially during low-light conditions.

Drivers are advised to slow down at intersections, avoid blocking crosswalks, and never drive impaired.

Bicyclists are urged to obey traffic laws, use hand signals, wear helmets, and use lights at night.

The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as part of a broader effort to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
