On Friday Stanford and Cal left the beleaguered college football conference for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
The move leaves just Oregon State and Washington State as the only Pac-12 schools.
The Pac 12 was once part of college football biggest traditions.
The annual Rose Bowl Game inside the City’s iconic stadium pitted the then Pac 10 winner against the Big Ten conference winner.
That tradition ended last year when the Tournament of Roses signed on to make the game part of the College Football Playoff.
The move came after seven Pac 12 teams bolted from the conference.
The exodus was led by conference standouts UCLA and USC in a move that left Gov. Gavin Newsom concerned about of other california schools in the conference,
In 2022, the Big Ten agreed to a seven-year, $8 billion media rights deal with Fox, CBS and NBC. Part of the decision will be based on whether those broadcast partners are willing to offer a pro-rata share — or something close — with the addition of four more schools.
The expansion additions mean the Big Ten will reissue its 2024 and 2025 football schedules, announced in early June.
Rumors of a Pac 12 merge with another conference continue to circulate, but most experts have proclaimed the Pac 12 is dead.
The situation makes the Pac-12 is on its way to the second major conference in the last 12 years to fail since the Big East, largely a basketball powerhouse, collapsed in 2011.
