The Caltech track and field program has unveiled its schedule for the upcoming 2017 season. Head Coach Ben Raphelson’s squad will open up the year with the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges All-Comers Meet and ultimately return to Claremont for the SCIAC Championships toward the end of the spring season.
On Feb. 11, the throwers open their season at the Alyssa Sialaris Memorial Throws Invitational in Whittier. The rest of the team will join them the following weekend to compete at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet on Feb. 18.
Caltech then makes its way back to Claremont for the 21stRossi Relays on Feb. 25. Rising sophomore Michelle Marasigan (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / James B. Conant) ran an impressive 3,000-meter race at last year’s relays to place ninth on the Caltech women’s track & field all-time Top 10 list.
The Beavers will contest their first SCIAC Multi-Dual of the season at the University of La Verne. In last year’s conference opener, the men’s team was able to pull off its second consecutive victory over Chapman University while the women saw Marasigan earn another ninth-place standing on the women’s top 10 list with her 800-meter performance.
The squad will head to the Occidental College Distance Carnival/Sprints Festival on March 4, at which rising sophomore Rohan Choudhury(Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) made his way onto the Caltech men’s track & field top-10 list for his 5,000-meter run.
Within the first three weeks of April, Caltech will compete in two more multi-dual meets (April 1, 15), which will be held at the University of Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer, respectively. The Beavers will make any final preparations in the following two weeks off from competition in the buildup to the SCIAC Championships on April 28-29. At last year’s conference finals, graduated senior Morgan Hill (San Diego, Calif. / Wasatch Acad.) claimed third place in the hammer throw to earn All-SCIAC honors after breaking an 81-year-old program record in the same event earlier in the season.
After the completion of conference competition, the Beavers will have two more chances to improve upon their marks at the Occidental Last Chance Invitational (May 5) and Redlands Last Chance Invitational (May 17-18) in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships hosted by the University of Mount Union in Geneva, Ohio from May 25-27.
