Caltech women’s soccer held the Whittier Poets scoreless in Pasadena Wednesday, as Junior goalkeeper Haleigh Gardner (San Ramon, Calif. / California) earned her second shutout of the season.
“Our shape off the ball was probably the best I’ve seen it this season,” Head Coach Scott Wilson said.
Gardner made three saves over the course of the match for the third shutout of her Caltech career. She made 14 saves in her first shutout this season, a 1-0 victory over Redlands at Caltech on Sept. 20. She has played all 90 minutes in 7 of the Beavers’ 9 games this year.
“Haleigh has produced some big saves in big moments for us,” Wilson said. “She’s a massive part of how we build and it’s been great to watch her progression along with the rest of the team this season.”
The Beaver defense frustrated Whittier strikers Wednesday, preventing eight of the Poets’ 11 shots from being on target.
“We were really organized and cut off certain areas of the field we felt would be problematic for us,” Wilson said.
Caltech is in the middle of a three-game homestand, its longest of the SCIAC schedule. It faces Pomona-Pitzer at home Saturday, Oct. 18 at 11:00 a.m. for Senior Day.
