City Council Ratifies Local Emergency Declaration

The City Council on Monday ratified City Manager Miguel Márquez declaration of a local emergency.

Márquez issued the declaration on Jan. 8 due to impacts on the City by devastating Santa Ana winds and a local fire that destroyed thousands of homes in Altadena and scorched several local buildings.

The fast moving fire broke out last Tuesday in Eaton Canyon. County firefighters were unable to contain the blaze which eventually made its way into nearby Altadena.

The blaze destroyed countless homes and businesses in the middle class community.

By Monday, firefighters were scrambling to stretch containment lines around the deadly fire, with at least two more days of gusting Santa Ana winds expected to begin Tuesday according to the National Weather Service.

As of Monday afternoon, the Eaton Fire had burned 14,117 acres, with containment rising to 33%.

Red flag warnings of critical fire danger will be in place over the burn area — and much of the Southland, including Pasadena through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Some areas could see wind gusts of 70 mph, combining with low humidity levels that could lead to rapid spread of any new fires, or re-ignition of existing blazes.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has reported 16 deaths tied to the Eaton Fire.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said he anticipates that number will rise.

Deputies and firefighters are conducting a grid search of the burn area, which he called “a very grim task.”

The City’s Municipal Code authorizes the City Manager, as the Director of Disaster Emergency Services, to issue a Declaration of Local Emergency if the City Council is not in session, provided the City Council takes action to ratify the Declaration within 7 days thereafter.

The City Council last ratified a local emergency declaration in 2020 to allow the City to better combat COVID-19.
