The City of Pasadena Department of Transportation has partnered with local nonprofit Day One and the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition to present Walktober, a month-long series of free walking events designed to encourage community members to explore the city on foot. The initiative, now in its eighth year, aims to showcase walking as a means of daily exercise, mental well-being, social connection, education, and transportation.
“Our goal is to inspire the Pasadena community with a variety of fun and exciting events that highlight the city’s rich history, cultural amenities, and natural beauty,” the city said.
Walktober events are designed to demonstrate the many reasons and ways people can enjoy walking, whether for fitness, meeting new people, learning about the city, or commuting to work or school.
The City of Pasadena has contracted with Day One, supported by the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, to fund, organize and staff the walking-themed public events throughout October. The collaboration represents a partnership with local organizations and community members to create the comprehensive calendar of walks, tours, and community events.
Fourteen specific events are scheduled throughout October, ranging from nature walks to architectural tours to neighborhood discovery sessions. Highlights include a Pasadena Audubon Bird Walk at the Gamble House on October 4 at 8 a.m., Lamanda Park: Past and Present with Councilmember Gene Masuda at 11 a.m. the same day, and a New Public Art & Architecture Walk on October 5 at 9 a.m.
Additional featured events include neighborhood discovery tours with Vice Mayor Jess Rivas and Councilmember Rick Cole, a Caltech Modern Campus Tour with Councilmember Jason Lyon on October 25, and specialized walks focusing on Route 66 history, Old Pasadena secrets, and the Wilson Avenue Greenway.
The series concludes October 26 with an Eaton Wash Stormwater Garden Project Tour.
The Department of Transportation encourages participants to walk, bike, or use public transit to reach event locations. Transportation resources include Pasadena Transit at PasadenaTransit.net, Metro bus and rail at Metro.net, and Foothill Transit at FoothillTransit.org for trip planning information.
Day One has over 35 years of experience working with residents, young people, and elected officials to strengthen communities by advancing public health and advocating for public policies. The Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition operates as an all-volunteer community advocacy group dedicated to promoting Complete Streets projects and policies for cleaner, healthier, sustainable, and more inclusive transportation solutions.
