City Prepares for Rain, Urges Residents to Take Precautions

Published on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 | 4:55 am

The City of Pasadena urges residents to take precautions as the region forecasts rainfall this week. Rain totals are expected to be from 1.5-3.0 in., and 3.0-6.0in. in the mountains according to the National Weather Service. Peak rates are expected on Thursday. With the burn scar area more susceptible to debris flows, flooding, and erosion, preparedness and safety are critical to protecting lives and property. Residents in and around the burn area should take immediate action to mitigate potential impacts.

Sandbags: Free pre-filled sandbags and self-serve sand and sandbags are available at the following locations for Pasadena residents while supplies last. 10 sandbags per resident with proof of residency. No contractors permitted.

  • Robinson Park (south parking lot), 1081 N. Fair Oaks, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,
  • Victory Park (parking lot along Altadena Dr.), 2575 Paloma St, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The following fire stations will have self-serve sand and sandbags ONLY.

  • Fire Station 37, 3430 E. Foothill Blvd., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Fire Station 38, 1150 Linda Vista Ave., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Debris Flow Barriers: Consider installing protective barriers to redirect water and debris away from structures.

Gutter and Drain Maintenance: Clear debris from gutters, downspouts, and storm drains to improve water flow.

Safety First:
Rainfall in burn areas can result in sudden and unpredictable hazards. Follow these safety tips:

  • Use caution around any downed or dangling wires or poles. If you see a downed wire, always assume it is live. Never approach or touch any wire that is down or dangling and immediately report it by calling 9-1-1.  For Power Emergencies, call (626) 744-4138.
  • Avoid Flood-Prone Areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, trails, or streams. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
  • Evacuation Information: If officials issue evacuation warnings or orders, residents are encouraged to know the difference.
  • Evacuation Warning: This is a notice to residents that they should prepare to evacuate due to a potential or anticipated threat.
  • Evacuation Order: This is a directive for residents to immediately evacuate due to an imminent threat to life and safety.

Emergency go bags: Ensure your emergency go bag is stocked with essentials, including flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishable food, and medications, and important documents. For more information, visit Ready.gov/Kit.

City Efforts:
The City of Pasadena is actively working to prepare and minimize risks by:

  • Upstaffing rescue trained personnel in the Fire Department for possible mud and debris flow.
  • Public Works staff will be on after-hours standby with tools and equipment ready to go.
  • Pasadena Water and Power staff are also on standby for possible outages or downed lines.
  • Placing k-rail barriers in areas of concern.
  • Clearing storm drains and culverts in affected areas.
  • Providing resources and information to the community.
  • Deploying crews to monitor conditions and respond to emergencies.

If you haven’t already, please register for the Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System (PLEAS) to receive voice, email and/or text emergency notifications. PLEAS messages are only sent in the event of imminent danger where action, such as evacuation, is required. Once you’ve registered with PLEAS, we also recommend registering with the County’s Alert LA County mass notification system.

Nixle is the primary notification system for the Pasadena Police Department. Register at Nixle.com to receive alerts by text message and/or email. You can also text your ZIP code to 888777 to opt in.
