The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department is gearing up for its 8th Annual Centennial Square Boxing Show, set to take place in front of the Pasadena City Hall at 100 N. Garfield Ave. on Friday, Aug. 25, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The event, highly anticipated since it returned to Centennial Square last year after the pandemic, promises an evening of thrilling Olympic-style boxing. Twelve bouts of action-packed, Olympic-style boxing will feature male and female competitors, ages 8 and older.
Over the past 20 years, scores of hopeful future Olympians and professionals have undergone training with the Villa-Parke Boxing Program, hosted by boxing specialist Fausto De La Torre.
Currently, more than 300 youth and adults are registered with the boxing gym. The Villa Parke Youth Program focuses on preparing youth for competition on a local, regional and national level, and teaches the fundamentals of Olympic-style boxing, conditioning for weight loss and fitness and health and nutritional awareness.
All phases of training include a strong focus on physical fitness, nutrition and health, a description of the program on the city’s website says.
The boxing event on Aug. 25 opens with ceremonies featuring the national anthem, accompanied by a color guard from the Second Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment. Visitors to Centennial Square also are treated to a lively atmosphere with DJ music setting the tone, classic cars on display, and food options available for purchase.
