Committee to Review Vice Mayor Selection Process on Monday

The Pasadena Legislative Policy Committee will review the city’s process for appointing a vice mayor when it meets at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, examining the historical context behind a selection that has traditionally rewarded council seniority.

The position is established by City Charter Section 408. Its role changed after a November 2024 charter amendment created an acting mayor position under Section 407 to fill a mayoral vacancy. By informal practice, the council appoints the longest-serving Councilmember who has not yet served as vice mayor, generally for two one-year terms.

The council’s next organizational meeting is scheduled for Dec. 7 and will include a new vice mayor appointment.

Councilmember Justin Jones is the longest-serving member who has not held the post. The council could formalize the process by resolution or ordinance, or continue current practice.

The Legislative Policy Committee is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, in the Council Chamber, Room S249, at Pasadena City Hall, 100 North Garfield Avenue, in Pasadena.
