Design Commission Asked to Approve New Signage for Five-Story Office Building

Pasadena’s Design Commission is holding a Consolidated Design Review on Tuesday, Sept. 13 on a proposal to allow two new illuminated building identification wall signs, each 163 sq. ft. in size, attached to the top of the east and west elevations of an existing 77-foot tall commercial building at 299 N. Euclid Ave. in Pasadena’s Council District 3.

299 North Euclid is a five-story office building consisting of 74,689 rentable square feet situated on approximately 0.56 acres.

The wall signs will contain a logo and lettering to identify Lucas Horsfall Accountants and Advisors as a tenant in the building, a report by the Department of Planning and Community Development said.

Lucas Horsfall relocated to the building in January 2020, a post on LinkedIn showed.

The proposed building signs will be back-lit, with one to be placed on the east elevation of the building, located at the top near the northern edge of the facade facing North Euclid Ave., and a second matching sign of the same dimensions on the west elevation near the northern edge of the façade facing North Garfield Ave.

Both signs would be made of aluminum channel letters painted blue with back-lit LED illumination and would read “Lucas Horsfall” with a corresponding logo.

In the report, the Planning Department said the proposed signage is in compliance with the applicable guidelines.

“They are attractive, high-quality signs that will be placed in locations that are appropriate to the design of the building and will replace signage previously approved in approximately the same locations,” the report said. “To ensure that the new signs respect the design of the building, staff recommends a condition of approval to ensure that the final plans submitted for permitting demonstrate that the signs are proportional to the scoring pattern found on both front and rear elevations.”

A portion of the Pasadena Municipal Code says building identification signs are allowed in the Central District provided that the building is greater than 75 feet in height, that the signs are located below the roof or parapet, that a maximum of one building identification sign is located per wall plane, and a maximum sign area of one square-foot per foot of primary frontage, but not exceeding 100 square feet.

The building, constructed in 1982, is five stories of commercial space which includes ground floor and subterranean parking. It’s at the southwest corner of North Euclid Ave. and Corson Street, directly south of Interstate 210, with parking that extends west to North Garfield Ave.

The property is located within the Civic Center/Midtown Subdistrict of the Central District Specific Plan. The surrounding land uses consist primarily of institutional, office, and multi-family residential uses in buildings of varying heights, styles, and ages.
