Fuller’s regional campus in Sacramento, California was treated to four days with Fuller President Richard Mouw as he visited the Capital Christian Center church to speak and meet with alumni.
Dr. Mouw’s trip on October 26 – 29 began with an evening alumni event where he spoke briefly on his main topic for the weekend, Christian civility.
On Saturday afternoon, Mouw delivered a lecture at Capital Christian Center titled “Christian Civility in an Election Year.” He told the audience that Christians need to nurture the right kind of zeal. He referenced theologian Martin Marty, who said Christians should learn to be civil people with conviction. Mouw noted that one part of being civil is to practice looking at the “humanness” inside each person, because people tend to de-humanize individuals with whom they disagree.
Dr. Mouw preached at three services at Capital Christian Center on Sunday. His sermon focused on 1 Peter 2:15, which urges believers to tell people about Christ with gentleness and respect.
The president’s visit concluded with a pastors’ lunch on Monday afternoon. He explained how pastors can practically approach civility within their own congregations by hosting conversations with people of different faiths or of different opinions.
