The California Institute of Technology is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibition that delves into the interplay between art and science over the past century. “Crossing Over: Art and Science at Caltech, 1920-2020” will open on Friday, September 27, marking a significant contribution to the PST ART: Art & Science Collide initiative.
The exhibition, which runs until Sunday, December 15, spans six outdoor and indoor venues across Caltech’s campus, including areas typically closed to the public. Visitors will encounter a diverse array of scientific drawings, paintings, photographs, films, instruments, molecular models, and rare books from the archives of Caltech and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Organized into three interconnected thematic sections — The Infinite Lawn, Time Stream, and Powers of Ten — the exhibition guides viewers through a journey from the vast expanses of the universe to the microscopic world of subatomic particles. Each section aims to illuminate the complex relationship between scientific discovery and artistic expression.
Contemporary artworks by acclaimed artists Lita Albuquerque, Jane Brucker, Lia Halloran, Shana Mabari, Hillary Mushkin, and Helen Pashgian complement the historical pieces. These installations offer modern perspectives on the ongoing dialogue between art and science, creating a unique visual narrative that spans a century of innovation.
The exhibition is free to the public and will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visitors can obtain a brochure at the first stop in Linde Laboratory, providing context and guidance for navigating the expansive display across campus.
Parking is available along California and Wilson Avenue, with Parking Structure 1 341 S. Wilson Ave and Structure 3 1248 California Blvd being closest to the exhibition. Weekend parking and weekday parking after 5 p.m. are free in campus lots, facilitating easy access for attendees.
As the first exhibition of its kind, “Crossing Over” promises to offer a unique perspective on the rich history of scientific achievement and its enduring influence on the arts. The showcase underscores Caltech’s role in keeping Pasadena at the forefront of innovation and cultural significance.
