A small explosion in a heating device at a chemical manufacturer at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday brought a full emergency response which closed the 100 block of North San Gabriel Boulevard.
A witness reported Walnut Street and San Gabriel Boulevard intersection were “closed for two blocks in every direction. Multiple paramedics, fire, Police Department vehicles on scene.”
Pasadena Fire Department spokesperson Lisa Derderian said the aftermath results of an explosion at Materia, Inc., which makes high-tech plastics, were extinguished by sprinklers, but a light odor remained in the area.
Firefighters are working to ensure that no runoff enters storm drains, Derderian said. About 12 employees were at facility at the time of the incident and all were evacuated unharmed.
Meanwhile, Pasadena police recommended that drivers avoid the area of San Gabriel Boulevard between Colorado and Foothill Boulevards. East and west traffic on Colorado Boulevard, Walnut Street, and Foothill Boulevard may also be impacted.
