A flat tire can turn a routine ride into a long walk home. On January 25, cyclists can learn to avoid that fate.

Day One, a Pasadena-based nonprofit, is hosting a free workshop on how to fix a flat bicycle tire from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at its headquarters, 175 North Euclid Avenue. The session is part of an ongoing series that the organization runs with Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, aimed at building basic bike maintenance skills among area riders.

Registration is required. Attendees can RSVP at bit.ly/DObikeworkshop and are asked to arrive 15 minutes early. Street parking is free on Sundays.

Day One, which has operated in Pasadena for more than 30 years, focuses on public health, youth empowerment, and active transportation. The organization has worked with the city and Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition on programming including the annual Pasadena Bike Month.

The workshop also comes as Day One has been distributing free bicycles to families affected by the Eaton Fire through Metro’s Adopt-a-Bike program. The fire, which began January 7, 2025, destroyed more than 9,000 structures in Altadena. Since then, Day One has received requests for over 300 bicycles and has partnered with local bike shops and co-ops to repair and distribute them.

According to the City of Pasadena and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, traffic crashes are the leading cause of premature death in the county for children aged 5 to 14.

“Bike month is a fun, annual encouragement program. The intention is to inspire people to get out and ride a bike,” Colin Bogart, Day One’s Active Transportation Director, said in a previous statement about the organization’s cycling programming. “Often people are afraid to do it. They’re concerned about getting hurt.”

Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, an all-volunteer organization, has partnered with Day One on bike advocacy for over a decade.

“We’ve been leading walks and bike rides that share the beauty of our city and advocating for safer streets for over 10 years,” Matt Stumbo, a coalition representative, said at a City Council meeting.

For more information, contact Day One at (626) 657-8744 or DOBike@godayone.org. The workshop is free.
