A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of Baldwin Park Police Officer Samuel Riveros, a former Pasadena parking enforcement officer and Pasadena City College student who was fatally shot in the line of duty on May 31.

Organizers have set a $50,000 goal to help cover funeral expenses and related costs.

Riveros, 35, died during a gun battle while responding to reports of an armed suspect in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue.

A nine-year law enforcement veteran and member of the Baldwin Park SWAT team, Riveros was attempting to rescue a wounded fellow officer when he was struck by gunfire.

He was transported to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Before joining Baldwin Park Police in 2016, Riveros served as a parking enforcement officer in Pasadena with Inter-Con Security Systems from 2012 to 2013. He earned an associate degree in administration of justice from Pasadena City College and later studied criminology at UC Irvine.

The Pasadena Police Department released a statement mourning his loss: “As you grieve the heartbreaking loss of one of your own, please know that we mourn with you. Our hearts are heavy, and we stand beside you.”

Another officer, Anthony Pimentel, was injured in the shooting but was released from the hospital. A civilian man was also found dead at the scene, believed to have been killed by the suspect before police arrived.

The suspect, who was shot during the exchange, remains in custody in stable condition. Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert Lopez praised Riveros as “an amazing man” and a devoted public servant.

“He answered a call of duty of shots fired to protect our residents in Baldwin Park. He and his fellow officer went in, as all law enforcement officers do — into the fire,” Lopez said.

Riveros was remembered not only for his bravery but also for his passion for snowboarding and his dedication as a Dodgers fan, attending games in stadiums across the country. Governor Gavin Newsom and Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis issued a joint statement honoring Riveros, calling his death “a tragic loss” and offering condolences to his loved ones.

Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, D-West Covina, thanked Riveros for his service, noting, “The sacrifices these officers make to keep us safe is unbelievable.”

Riveros is survived by his mother and sister. Donations to the fundraiser are being accepted in gratitude for his service and to support his grieving family.
