The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department and California Golden Gloves will host the annual Southern California Regional Boxing Tournament this month.

The competition begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 13 at the Victory Park Recreation Center, 2575 Paloma St., Pasadena and continues at noon Friday, March 14 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 16.

The Villa Parke Boxing Program will be represented by Christopher Cano, Michael Diaz, Fatima Martinez, and Adriana Nuñez.

The California Golden Gloves is one of the most prestigious boxing tournaments in amateur boxing that has been in existence since 1923.

The tournament was born when Arch Ward, sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, came up with the idea of a citywide, Chicago amateur boxing tournament, and gained sponsorship from the Tribune in 1927.

Originally an annual tournament was held between Chicago and New York. In later years the idea was taken up by other cities, and a national tournament was held.

This tournament serves as a platform for amateur boxers to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. The tournament will feature top male and female athletes, ages 18 and older, from across Southern California.

General admission tickets are available for purchase at the door on tournament days only. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for ages 10 and under.

The California Golden Gloves State Championships will also be held at Victory Park Recreation Center on April 12 and 13 this year.
