Guest Opinion | Akila Gibbs: Pasadena Needs Its Senior Center Now More Than Ever

For 66 years, the Pasadena Senior Center has been one of our city’s most enduring commitments to dignity, connection, and healthy aging. As September marks Senior Center Month, it is a fitting time to recognize the essential role senior centers play in strengthening communities, especially in Pasadena, where the population of older adults is higher than in many cities of comparable size. The City of Pasadena needs the Senior Center now more than ever.

Since 1960, the Pasadena Senior Center has offered more programs and services for older adults than any organization in our city. That distinction reflects a belief that aging should be embraced, not feared. Every day, older adults come through our doors seeking movement, friendship, learning, and support. They come because they know they will be welcomed, seen, and valued.

A Community Anchor for Healthy Aging

The Center’s programs reflect the full spectrum of what older adults need to thrive. Health programs and fitness classes help members stay active and independent. Social services provide food distribution, case management, mental health support, and crisis recovery. Arts and culture spark creativity. Veterans support offers community and resources. Lifelong learning keeps minds sharp and spirits high.

These offerings reduce isolation, improve health outcomes, and create a sense of belonging that is essential to aging well. At a time when many older adults face loneliness, financial strain, or life transitions, the Pasadena Senior Center provides stability, purpose, and joy.

Celebrating Senior Center Month with Purpose

To honor Senior Center Month, the Pasadena Senior Center will host Age Well Day on September 19, a community celebration of healthy aging. The event will bring together fitness, education, social engagement, and fun, offering a firsthand look at what aging well can truly mean. It is an invitation to the broader Pasadena community to see the Center not simply as a building, but as a living hub of possibility.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, our charge is clear: to meet the changing needs of older adults with programs that are welcoming, relevant, and rooted in community. As participation grows and services expand, the Pasadena Senior Center will continue to be a place where people find connection, purpose, and support. In celebrating Senior Center Month, we honor 66 years of service and renew our commitment to helping every older adult age with dignity and possibility.
