Spring is here, but some of these days feel more like summer! What do you do when it’s 90 degrees and you’re hungry? Think salads – crisp, cool and satisfying. Just in time, one of Old Pasadena’s favorite haunts is ushering in a fresh bounty of salads well worth tasting.
Tede’s Cafe on Union Street is tossing up a summer storm of healthy offerings, headed up by the hefty “Garbage Salad” (burly Sean Regan, Tede’s owner, says even real men will love this offering).
“We cut all our veggies fresh daily, so when you bite into it you know you’re not getting something limp that’s been sitting. The cucumbers are crispy, the tomatoes are crispy,” Regan asserts. “It’s got iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, red onion, avocado, bacon, and a hard-boiled egg, with your choice of dressing.”
Another refreshing option, just introduced: Tede’s Spring Salad. Mixed greens, bleu cheese crumbles, dried cranberries, candied pecans, and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette dressing all come together in this tasty blend.
All of Regan’s salads are crackling fresh.
If you like a little spice, their Spicy Chicken Caesar salad shouldn’t be missed. It’s a regular Caesar salad punched up with an extra kick from jalapenos, pepperoncinis, shredded jack cheese, and Caesar dressing.
According to Sal Corvino, general manager of Tede’s Cafe, their Chicken Salad is fast becoming one of the top-selling selections. With roasted chicken, walnuts, cranberries, celery, a little mayo and secret seasoning, it’s got a growing group of fans.
Corvino is an asset at Tede’s because he is constantly crafting new things in the kitchen. Born in Italy, he grew up cooking and loves to be in the kitchen. Corvino adds his brand of Italian passion to his creations, and is a huge “secret weapon” at Tede’s. Not only did he have a hand in creating the spring salads, but he hand-crafts many of the dressings from scratch.
Regan says the entire crew at Tede’s is dedicated to serving it fresh and fast.
“I have a passion for it!” he laughs. “It’s something that I hope I get to do for the rest of my life!”
