Here’s The Latest Information About Today’s Major Rain Storm

Published on Thursday, February 13, 2025 | 6:37 am

The largest storm system of the season so far is set to sweep through Pasadena today, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall and possible thunderstorms before transitioning to a warming trend this weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasters early Thursday.

Local residents can expect temperatures to reach only into the mid to upper 50s today, with cloudy skies and increasing winds as the powerful storm system approaches.

The morning begins with steady light to moderate rainfall that will intensify throughout the day.

A cold front will move through the Los Angeles area by early to mid-evening, bringing the potential for rainfall rates exceeding one inch per hour. The chance of rain is 100 percent with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.

The storm system will transition to scattered showers overnight, tapering off by Friday afternoon with additional rainfall amounts of less than a quarter inch.

Temperatures will begin a steady climb starting Friday, with highs reaching the mid-60s. The warming trend will continue into the weekend, with Sunday bringing significant warming as temperatures push into the upper 60s to lower 70s across the Pasadena area.

The storm system is expected to deliver substantial rainfall totals, with around 1.5 inches forecast for most areas. Higher amounts are possible in the foothills and along slope-facing areas, which could receive up to 3 inches. The most intense rainfall is expected during the cold front passage this evening.

Wind conditions will intensify throughout the day, particularly as the cold front approaches. While the strongest winds will remain in coastal areas, Pasadena could experience advisory-level gusts during the height of the storm. Gusty northwest winds will continue into Friday afternoon.

The weekend outlook brings welcome relief from the active weather pattern. Saturday will be dry with some lingering gusty winds, while Sunday will be mostly cloudy but notably warmer as offshore flow develops.

Pasadena residents should be prepared for possible street flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in areas with poor drainage. The saturated ground from recent rains could increase the risk of fallen tree branches during gusty conditions.

Due to the potential for rainfall rates exceeding one inch per hour, the National Weather Service warns of possible debris flows in recent burn areas. While this is not a direct threat to most of Pasadena, residents in foothill areas should remain alert to changing conditions.

Looking ahead to next week, forecasters predict a much-needed break from stormy weather. Monday through Wednesday will see partly cloudy skies with morning low clouds possible. Temperatures will continue their warming trend, reaching the upper 60s to mid-70s by Wednesday.

This significant storm system marks what appears to be the last major rainfall event for the immediate future, as high pressure builds into the region bringing warmer, drier conditions that will persist through much of next week.
