Human Services Commission to Hear About Job Placement Program for Adults with Disabilities

The Pasadena Human Services Commission will hear a presentation Wednesday about employment opportunities for adults with disabilities.

AbilityFirst will present its supported employment program at the commission’s regular meeting. The session begins at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Community Center, 1020 North Fair Oaks Avenue.

The program helps job seekers with disabilities find work in their communities. It provides one-on-one coaching and support.

Job developers work with participants to create resumes and practice interviews. They also help clients search for opportunities and learn to apply for jobs online and in person.

The service is individualized to fit each person’s talents, interests and abilities. Once someone finds a job, a coach provides direct workplace support.

Coaches learn tasks alongside new employees. They provide advocacy and help workers communicate with supervisors.

The program also offers internships for on-the-job training. These can lead to part-time or full-time paid positions.

AbilityFirst’s DiscoverAbility program provides direction for job searches. It includes job shadowing and interest assessments. The time-limited program helps transition clients move from high school to community employment.

AbilityFirst holds a three-year accreditation from CARF International. The nonprofit accredits health and human services providers based on internationally recognized standards.

The accreditation covers community employment services, including employment supports and job development.

AbilityFirst also operates Club 626 at the Lawrence L. Frank Center, located at 201 S. Kinneloa Avenue, Pasadena. The social program serves adults 18 and older with disabilities.

Club 626 offers live performances and interactive activities. It creates an atmosphere that duplicates a night out on the town.
