Government offices and financial markets will close Friday, but banks will remain open, emergency services will stay staffed, trash pickup will run on schedule and parks will remain open for holiday gatherings

Most government offices and financial markets will be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, but the Pasadena Police Department and Pasadena Fire Department will be staffed for emergencies, banks will remain open and city trash collection will run on its regular schedule, city officials said.

Because Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4, this year, the federal executive branch is observing the holiday on the preceding Friday, July 3, under long-standing federal practice for weekend holidays. That shifts most government closures to Friday, while a handful of services — including United States Postal Service retail counters and mail delivery — track the Saturday calendar date. The Federal Reserve System and most commercial banks follow a different rule that keeps banks open Friday. Pasadena City Hall and most municipal offices will close Friday, with regular operations resuming Monday, July 6, according to a city announcement.

Government and Municipal Services

Pasadena City Hall, the City Service Center, the Municipal Services Payment Center, the Parking Office and the Permit Center will all be closed Friday, July 3. The City Service Center will return to normal business hours at 8 a.m. Monday, July 6, but residents may submit requests any time during the closure through the City Service Center website at CityOfPasadena.net/city-service-center, the City Service Center mobile app, or by calling (626) 744-7311. All requests, voicemails and emails will be monitored.

The Permit Center will be closed Friday, though subtrade permits and plan submittals for new construction, tenant improvements, accessory dwelling units and additions will remain available through Permit Center Online at CityOfPasadena.net/PermitCenterOnline. In-person operations resume Monday, July 6.

The Pasadena Water and Power Department’s Customer Call Center will also be closed Friday. Customers may access their accounts and pay bills online at PWPweb.com or by calling (626) 744-4005. For power emergencies, call (626) 744-4673. For water emergencies, call (626) 744-4138.

The Pasadena City Council will not meet on the holiday. The next regularly scheduled Council meeting is at 5 p.m. Monday, July 6, in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave.

Federal offices, State of California offices and Los Angeles County government offices will also be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of the federal holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and state and county holiday calendars.

Emergency Services

The Pasadena Police Department and Pasadena Fire Department will be staffed for patrol, jail, fire, paramedic and other emergency operations, though administrative offices will be closed. Residents should dial 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies. To report suspicious activity or illegal fireworks — which are prohibited citywide — call the Pasadena Police Department non-emergency line at (626) 744-4241 or use the City Service Center mobile app, available on Google Play and the App Store.

Transportation and Parking

Pasadena Transit Route 33 will operate on a Sunday schedule Saturday, July 4. All other Pasadena Transit routes and Dial-A-Ride service will not run on Independence Day. Riders should confirm Friday, July 3, operations directly with the Pasadena Department of Transportation.

The Municipal Services Payment Center and Parking Office at City Hall will be closed. All parking meters not posted as a “No Parking” zone will be free Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, and time limits will not be enforced. Violations for overnight parking, red curb parking, “No Parking” zones and blocking fire hydrants will be enforced. Motorists are especially cautioned about parking restrictions in the Arroyo Seco area near Rose Bowl Stadium. Regular enforcement resumes Sunday, July 5.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) buses and trains are expected to operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule Saturday, July 4, consistent with Metro’s standard federal-holiday practice. Riders should confirm at metro.net. Metrolink will run its weekend schedule Friday, July 3, on the Antelope Valley, Orange County, 91/Perris Valley, San Bernardino, Inland Empire-Orange County and Ventura County lines; the Riverside Line will not run Friday. Metrolink and its Arrow service will operate regular weekend schedules Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5.

Postal and Package Services

The United States Postal Service will operate on a normal schedule Friday, July 3, with regular retail hours and mail delivery. All post offices will be closed and no regular mail will be delivered Saturday, July 4. Priority Mail Express will continue Saturday. Regular service resumes Monday, July 6.

United Parcel Service will operate normally Friday, July 3, but will not offer pickup or delivery Saturday, July 4, except for urgent and critical shipments through UPS Express Critical. The UPS Store locations will generally be open Friday; hours may vary Saturday, and customers should check with their local store.

FedEx Express will make regular deliveries Friday, July 3, though on-call pickups may be earlier than usual. FedEx will not provide U.S. parcel or express freight service Saturday, July 4, except for FedEx Custom Critical shipments. FedEx Office locations will operate on modified hours both days; customers should check with their local location.

Financial Services

Most banks — including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase — will be open Friday, July 3, and operating normal business hours. The Federal Reserve System treats Independence Day 2026 as Saturday, July 4, and under the Federal Reserve’s holiday-observance rule, Federal Reserve Banks and branches remain open on the preceding Friday when a holiday falls on a Saturday. Most commercial banks and credit unions follow the same schedule. Automated teller machines and online banking will remain available throughout the holiday weekend. Saturday, July 4, branch hours for banks that normally operate on weekends may be affected, and customers should check with their local branch.

The New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq Stock Market and U.S. bond markets will all be closed Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day, under the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association observed-holiday schedule, which differs from the Federal Reserve calendar. Bond markets will close early at 2 p.m. Eastern Time Thursday, July 2, ahead of the holiday. Regular trading resumes Monday, July 6.

Schools and Libraries

Pasadena Unified School District administrative offices will be closed Friday, July 3. The district is on summer recess, and no K-12 classes were scheduled regardless. Pasadena City College and ArtCenter College of Design administrative offices will also be closed; both institutions offer summer sessions, and students should confirm individual class schedules directly with each institution. All Pasadena Public Library branches will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, and will reopen on their regular schedules the following business day.

Recreation, Parks, Waste and Sanitation

City trash, recycling and yard waste collection will proceed on the regular Friday, July 3, schedule with no delays. Bulky-item pick-ups will not be available.

All Pasadena parks will remain open for picnics, recreation and family gatherings. Community centers operated by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department will be closed Saturday, July 4; Friday, July 3, community center hours were not addressed in the city announcement and should be confirmed with the department. No site reservations will be accepted for the holiday. To help visitors stay cool, the Honorable John J. Kennedy Pool will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. and the splash pad at La Pintoresca Park will be available from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., according to the city announcement.

Retail and Business

Most major grocery chains — including Vons, Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market and Pavilions — are expected to remain open Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, though individual stores may adjust hours. Major pharmacies including CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid are expected to be open, though pharmacy counters may operate on reduced holiday hours. Major retailers including Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy are expected to remain open. Costco warehouse clubs will be closed Saturday, July 4. Shopping districts including Old Pasadena and Paseo Colorado will remain open, though individual stores may set their own holiday hours. Many restaurants will be open, some with modified schedules. Customers are urged to check with individual businesses before visiting.

Fourth of July Events

There will be no city-sponsored fireworks display in Pasadena this year.

The Rose Bowl Stadium, 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, will host the three-day FoodieLand Food Festival from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5. Hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Friday and 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The festival features dozens of food vendors, live entertainment and shopping. A ticketed drone show is scheduled for Saturday, July 4. Motorists heading to the Rose Bowl are cautioned about parking restrictions in the Arroyo Seco area, where regular enforcement remains in effect for overnight parking, red curbs, “No Parking” zones and fire hydrants.

The Madison Heights neighborhood will hold its annual Fourth of July parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 4, stepping off at Euclid Avenue and Fillmore Street. Families are invited to decorate bikes, tricycles and strollers to march in the procession, which will be followed by a neighborhood block party and picnic with food trucks and outdoor games.

The City of Pasadena reminds residents that all fireworks are illegal in Pasadena. Illegal fireworks and other suspicious activity may be reported to the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241 or through the City Service Center mobile app.

Regular city services, mail delivery and business operations will resume Monday, July 6.
