Inmate Floods Pasadena City Jail Cell, Causing Significant Damage

A San Jose man caused significant damage to his cell at the Pasadena City Jail on Sunday, police said.

Rigoberto Zuniga, 40, damaged a fire sprinkler head inside his cell at approximately 10:33 a.m. in the 200 block of Garfield Ave, causing flooding, according to Pasadena Police Lieutenant Matt Campeau.

Zuniga had been booked into the Pasadena City Jail on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 6:28 p.m. by the San Marino Police Department on suspicion of arson, Campeau said.

Pasadena Fire Department crews and the members of the City’s building systems and fleet management division responded to assess and repair the damage to the cell.

Campeau said Zuniga was later transported to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles. He remains being bars on $75,000 bond, according to online booking records.

Pasadena police filed an unlawful destruction of jail property report for the damages and Zuniga is expected to face the additional charges along with the arson charge, said Campeau.

San Marino Police Department uses the Pasadena jail facilities because they do not have their own, according to Campeau.
