Dr. Phlunté Riddle’s campaign for Assembly District 41 has gained the support of the International Longshore Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 13, representing port workers in the region.
Riddle’s campaign said the endorsement adds to a growing coalition of labor unions supporting Riddle’s campaign, including Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California, Teamsters Joint Council 42, International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 36, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) California, and AFSCME District Council 36, among others.
In the statement, Gary Herrera, President of ILWU Local 13, highlighted Riddle’s understanding of the challenges faced by union members and her commitment to ensuring workers have a voice in crucial decisions affecting the region’s ports.
“As a former union member, she understands the challenges that our members face,” Herrera said. “She will ensure that our workers, who keep goods flowing through our region’s vital ports, will have a seat at the table when the decisions affecting the ports, local communities, and our workers are being contemplated.”
Dr. Riddle said she was grateful to have the ILWU chapter’s support.
“Their members are the reason that our ports and supply chains are the envy of the world,” Dr. Riddle said. “Their commitment and hard work are essential to the economic life of our region. I look forward to working with them to fight for the dignity of our workers.”
Beyond ILWU Local 13, Dr. Riddle’s endorsements span a diverse spectrum, including various legislative caucuses, elected officials, and community leaders. Notable supporters include State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager, and Former Pasadena Mayor William Paparian, Riddle’s campaign said.
